February Events:

  • 2nd – Boy group Mr.Mr disbands
  • 3rd – Korean Hip Hop Awards online vote closes
  • 6th – SPICA announces disbandment and release from B2M Entertainment (formerly Gil Entertainment)
  • 9th – T.O.P’s enlistment begins
  • 9th – BTS sets a new Gaon Record by breaking their own album sales record with the highest album sales for a single album since the Gaon Charting began in 2010. WINGS currently holds the record at 773,356 copies. (KpG note: BTS has created another record as it has only been 4 months since WINGS was released.)
  • 10th – Wonder Girls release their final song on their 10th anniversary before disbanding.
  • 13th – BTS becomes the first KPop Group to hit the US Billboard and iTunes top 10.
  • 15th – The Ministry of Culture announced that midnight song releases will no longer be counted in real time for Korean streaming sites like MelOn, Soribada, Bugs, Naver, and so on. Songs released at midnight will not be charted until 1pm the following afternoon, and real time rankings will only be counted from 12:00 noon until 6pm. The change will go into effect in March.
  • 20th – BTS sets a new record being the first KPop group to reach 10 million YouTube views in under 24 hours.
    • (KpG note: There were numerous records set by both BTS and TWICE beginning on the 20th. Those will be listed on the Look Back at February page.)
  • 21st – SM Entertainment announces they plan to sue creators of the Indian flim “KANNAYA” for plagiarizin EXO songs for their OST.
  • 22nd – Gaon Chart Awards
  • 24th – Cube refuses to allow BEAST to keep it’s name and the now 5 member group announces they will go forward with the new name Highlight under their own agency Around US Entertainment. They will be debuting under the new name in March.
  • 25th – Japan Gold Disc Awards. KPop winners are BigBang, BTS, 2PM, iKON, and N.Flying.
  • 25th – Gugudan changes the date of their comeback again. This time it’s February 27th. [That’s only 2 days away. Hopefully they’ll actually stick with it this time. Pretty sure whomever sets the dates at the company for gu9udan is a wack-a-mole addict.]
  • 28th – Chanyeol (EXO) hits 10 Million followers on Instagram. If you want to join the fun, his account is real_pcy.
  • 14th Korean Music Awards (TBA- usually February/March)
  • TBA – Running Man Ends or not… again. (KpG Note: At this point it feels like all that drama was an attempt for a ratings grab)

  • GRACE’s Zombie High MV features fan art. Her favorite was chosen as the album cover.

  • Wonder Girls final song will be released on their 10th Anniversary. February 10th.
  • HOON  (from U-Kiss) will make his,solo debut as a Japanese release
  • GOT7 release has been moved to March
  • BTS’s extension includes WINGS + 3.5 new songs. (Soooo… a repack. How is this not a repack?! The Korean labeling system confuses me.)
  • Wutan’s new album release will be in 2 parts- online release will be Feb 13th, and offline full release will be Feb 20th.
  • gu9udan finally pegged a release date- February 28th (fingers crossed they don’t pull it off the scedule… again)
  • SHINee and Boyfriend both release Japanese on February 22nd
  • High4  is a mini (Feb. 27)
